DASH: AI/ML and IoT-powered unified system to detect, predict and mitigate wildfires
Climate change has amplified the frequency and severity of wildfires globally. Uncontrollable wildfires are creating havoc and devastating our planet. Wildfires result in carbon emissions, environmental pollution, irreversible loss of habitat, accelerating extinction, loss of human lives and significant economic and social burdens on countries.
There is a global focus on wildfires. The Paris Agreement, signed by 197 countries, has re-emphasized the need for action to limit global warming to well below 2°C. The climatic extremes we are seeing now are a result of a 1°C rise. The World Bank, the United Nations (IPCC, UNFCC, UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO, WMO, GFC, UNDRR) and other organizations are prioritizing Climate Action Agenda to ensure preparedness for using early warning systems and reducing Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. The G20 countries have unanimously committed, as part of Delhi Declaration 2023, to working towards preventing and
mitigating wildfires.
One of the significant challenges faced during crisis management is the shortage of resources and understaffing, which compounds the problem. Worldwide, first responders find themselves inundated with a high volume of fire alerts from disparate systems, leaving them struggling to respond promptly. Inadequate responses can lead to uncontrollable fires, resulting in loss of life and habitat.
DASH: AI/ML and IOT-powered unified system detects, predicts and mitigates wildfires. The AI-model is developed to accurately identify wildfire risks, monitor real-time and during emergency and provide on-ground mitigation support. It sends notifications and alerts to first-responders and also assists through drone-assisted surveillance and early mitigation efforts. It enables in-depth analysis of the fire’s path and by providing extinguishing capabilities for remote and challenging terrains. DASH’s approach is unified and modular, with the ultimate goal of enhancing current methods.
Other use cases of the solution include surveillance and monitoring the overall health of the forest, AI-driven analytics for goal setting, spearheading public awareness through social media outreach and assisting other humanitarian efforts.
The community is an integral stakeholder and DASH has a dedicated module that empowers communities by assisting in building their capacity for climate resilience. There are robust community training programmes, including workshops and awareness creation sessions, with a special focus on youth and women.
DASH contributes directly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 (Climate Action), 15 (Life on Land) and 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), with a focus on reducing GHGs, protecting the environment, conservation of biodiversity, health and well-being of communities.
